Xbox Series X and PS5 stocks may have been under pressure since the launch of the new consoles. Since November 2020, many gamers have been waiting for their machine as the shortage of semiconductors continues to impact the world of technology. And unfortunately that’s not going to get any better anytime soon.

This article has been updated with Intel’s latest statements on the subject.. Continue to follow the status of Xbox Series X stocks live online and in store in our dedicated file and to be alerted to stocks on our Discord server.

Xbox Series X and PS5 stocks still hard to find

The shortage of semiconductors not only impacts the video game industry, but also that of PCs, servers and cars. The demand is such that the production still does not manage to follow and when we look at the history of the declarations of each other, it is clear that the future is quite unpredictable. Every six months or so, we learn that the shortage is expected to last longer than expected.

  • May 2022: Pat Gelsinger, CEO of Intel, confirmed to CNBC that the semiconductor shortage is likely to last until 2024.
  • September 2021: Phil Spencer, boss of Xbox, confirms that the supply problems will take place until 2022, without saying until when exactly.
  • September 2021: Toshiba announces that it won’t be able to supply enough chips for at least a year, until the end of 2022.
  • July 2021: Lisa Su, CEO of AMD, said the situation remains tense, but the situation should improve in 2022.
  • November 2020: Microsoft says the shortage is expected to last until at least April 2021.
  • March 2021: Foxconn says it cannot keep up and announces a 10% reduction in shipments.

Phil Spencer, head of the Xbox division, confirmed in an interview on September 29, 2021 that Xbox Series X console supply issues would continue through 2022, but chips weren’t the only factor in the equation.

I think it’s probably simplistic to just call it a chip problem. When I think about what it means to get the parts needed to build a console today and then get it to the markets where the demand is, there are several sticking points in that process. And I think with regret that this is going to follow us for months and months, certainly until the end of this calendar year and until next year.

Toshiba’s comments for the month of September 2021, reported by Bloombergmentioned shortages until the end of 2022.

“The supply of chips will remain very complicated at least until September next year. In some cases, some customers may not be fully served until 2023.”

Takeshi Kamebuchi, in charge of semiconductors for Toshiba, underlines here that the shortage of components is coupled with an ever-increasing demand. This clearly referred to the video game consoles which will be affected by the shortages, which unfortunately shows that the situation will remain tense until the end of 2022, or even 2023.

This should lead manufacturers to revise the designs of some of their devices. Sony has already followed suit with a new version of its lighter PS5. “Game console manufacturers are among the most demanding customers and I sincerely apologize for their frustration as none of them are 100% satisfied,” added Kamebuchi.

For now, everything suggests that it will still be difficult to find an Xbox Series X or a PS5 easily for quite a while.

Latest Statements from Manufacturers and Builders on Component Shortages

  • AMD extends its shortage forecast again. Pat Gelsinger, CEO of Intel, initially spoke of a shortage that was expected to last until at least the second quarter of 2022, i.e. until June 2022 at least. But during an interview with CNBC in April 2022, the Intel boss finally revised the deadline by talking about 2024. “We believe the overall semiconductor shortage will now drift towards 2024, compared to our previous estimates of 2023, simply because shortages have now hit equipment and some of these factory ramps will be under more pressure. . »
  • Intel announced a $20 billion plan in March 2021 to expand its chip manufacturing capacity with the construction of two factories in Arizona and by opening its factories to outside customers. What’s more, the company also wants to expand to other locations in the US and Europe. Currently, more than two-thirds of the chips used in the world are made in Asia.

The demand for semiconductors is exploding all over the world since, in addition to the usual electronic devices such as telephones, the electric car industry is also a major consumer of these components and represents a much larger market than that of consoles which risk of being given lower priority than the others.
