Lost Wing was released on July 31, 2020 on all platforms, it is published by 2Awesome Studio and developed by BoxFrog Games. 2Awesome Studio published a few games but never from the same developer. As it concerns BoxFrog Games they published only three games and Lost Wing is the only game that has really succeeded since the others are not found on theApp store and the Google play.
The “space invader” of the future
You control a ship with which you will have to avoid many obstacles along the way and recovering as many points as possible. The game is presented as an arcade game where the levels are infinite as long as you don’t lose your three lives and where the goal is to get as many points as possible.
You will only move horizontally with the possibility of jumping over certain elements with at your disposal laser beams and a small smart bomb which is recoverable as a bonus by advancing in the level.
The game can go slow or it can go full speed with ZR to speed up and ZL to slow down. You can leave it alone, but the game will definitely go faster after a while.
The handling is perfect, you will never have difficulty controlling your vehicle. The only moments of difficulty correspond to the loss of a fin, which will cause a huge loss of speed on the horizontal movements of the damaged side.
The shots can destroy certain elements of the decor which are easily recognizable by their neon blue colors and the smart bombs do the same thing by destroying absolutely everything in their path and this, up to a certain distance.
When you destroy destructible elements, you will get points (1K, 2K, 4K…) which will be more important if you have previously collected these species of white balls which will create a combo bar and increase the score considerably.
You have several elements that increase the score, by destroying the decorations which give points, by advancing as far and as quickly as possible and all that is multiplied by the combo bar.
The goal is to get the world record since there are scores online to compare your performance to others. The final score will be a form ofXP which will allow you to obtain new ships, colors and even new levels to vary the pleasures.
An expanding world
You will not have access to all the levels of the game, you will have to unlock them gradually by obtaining as many points as possible. Some levels will have specific rules that must be followed in order to win. For the rest, the majority of levels consist of advancing tirelessly until you perish. Each level has a good number of annoying elements which will be different from one world to another. For a game that repeats itself through its obstacles, the fact that you have to get a high enough score to discover more vicious and more numerous traps, makes the experience much less redundant.
Unlocking everything is not very rewarding
The ship will be customizable: you will have three types of ships with seven colors that can be obtained by leveling up. The different ships do not seem to have a major influence on the gameplay. You will be able to do thirteen levels of which three levels are just levels to get points where you have to go as far as possible and the other ten levels are extensions of the three levels with challenges to do (for example: score the most point in one turn).
After reaching level twenty-seven, you will have unlocked all available items (skin, ship, track); there will be nothing but the challenge of having the best record. On the other hand, leveling up is quite boring: you quickly unlock the second world, but leveling up is tricky from there and it will be necessary to loop the first two worlds, it’s very redundant.
An electro atmosphere with airs of TRON
The music will only be background music that accompanies your performance and will remind you of some electro music. They are not exceptional, but they will largely fill your adventure in these worlds of the future.
The graphics are somewhat reminiscent TRON Where Wipeoutmaybe even a mixture of the two with a majority of cold and dark colors.
The animation is correct, it still makes the coffee and we’re not going to ask it to reach for the moon so that we can feel each acceleration of the ship. The presentation of the menus and their ergonomics is simple while remaining in the theme of the game, there are not many of them so we won’t have to complain.
Despite the little decor that we see, it manages very well to embellish the game despite a meager budget, it will never be worth a mario odyssey but it’s still a performance when you see some games for the same price (namely €7.99).
