At the end of 2021, Apple surprised everyone with the announcement of a self-service repair program. Self Service Repair is officially available since this week and concerns the United States as expected. For other countries and starting with Europe, it will be later this year.
Operated by a third-party supplier authorized by Apple, a new online store offers more than 200 parts and tools to allow so-called experienced customers to carry out repairs on the iPhone 12, iPhone 13 ranges as well as on theiPhone SE third generation. This affects the screen, battery, camera, bottom speaker, motor for haptic feedback or the iPhone’s SIM card tray.
Later, but without going into details, Apple indicates that the program will include manuals, parts and tools for repairs on Mac computers equipped with an Apple Silicon chip.
The cost of a do-it-yourself repair
Apple releases repair manuals for each device concerned and the Self Service Repair Store allows you to order parts and tools. These are the same ones used by professionals in Apple’s repair network and at the same price.
In the absence of the purchase of suitable tools, a tool kit is for rent at $49 for a repair to be made. Delivered free of charge, it must be returned within a week.
Taking for example the case of theiPhone 13 Pro Max in the top of the range and a major repair, the necessary for the change of a screen is proposed (excluding tools) at $311.96, knowing that the cost of out-of-warranty screen replacement is $329 otherwise as part of a repair performed by Apple.
What to wonder if the game is really worth the candle. By returning the replaced screen for recycling, there is still a refund of $33.60. On the other hand, the program will potentially be more advantageous for small repairs.
