In his column, PC gamer author Richard Cobbett recalls DuckTales: The Quest for Gold. The game appeared around the same time as the acclaimed DuckTales, but failed to match its success. Rightly so, according to Cobbett, who says DuckTales: The Quest for Gold was just awful.
When hearing the word DuckTales, many users will probably think of the animated series from the late 80s. Or the game of the same name, released in 1989 for the NES and 1990 for the Game Boy, and of which the Moon Theme should be particularly memorable. In its PC Gamer Column author Richard Cobbett recalled another DuckTales game that he believes has rightly been forgotten.
DuckTales for Amiga and DOS
What is meant is DuckTales: The Quest for Gold, which appeared in 1990 for Amiga, Commodore 64, Atari ST and DOS. In it, Scrooge McDuck and his rival Mac Moneysac fight to become the world’s richest duck and Dime Magazine’s Duck of the Year. In the role of Scrooge, players have 30 in-game days to amass as many treasures as possible.
Players will travel around the world visiting some of the locations that have previously appeared in the popular animated series. Four different scenarios are distributed across the different locations and reflect the environment. Some scenarios are platform-based levels, others involve navigating an airplane, and others require exploring a cave while being chased by a mummy. In addition, there are two other ways to get money: Scrooge can dive for rare coins in his money vault or gamble on the stock market.
According to Richard Cobbett, it’s no wonder DuckTales: The Quest for Gold has been forgotten by many players. It’s supposed to be a terrible game. Most minigames would not be fun. While the DOS version was also quite unsightly, the Amiga at least had better graphics and some snippets of language. The controls are said to have been bad, especially in jungle levels.
