The French Ministry of Culture has now issued rules on how government officials and authorities must use French words for certain imported words from the gaming world. These are terms such as “eSports”, “pro-gamer” and “streamer”.

This is something you introduce to preserve the French language and make it easier for the French to communicate in their mother tongue. France has been working for over a hundred years to preserve its language and use as few, above all, English words in its language as possible.

Following the entry into force of the new language rules, French authorities and government officials will, among other things, replace “cloud gaming” with “jeu video en nuage”, “eSports” with “jeu video de competition”, “pro-gamer” with “joueur professionnel” and “streamer” with “joueur-animateur en direct”.
