Will virtual sneakers be as successful as the physical versions? This is surely the wish of Nike, which has launched new digital sneakers, the CryptoKicks.

Nike is leveraging the talents of fledgling virtual fashion design studio RTFKT, purchased last December. The sports equipment manufacturer, which does not want to miss out on the metaverse and NFTs, is launching its first digital sneakers in a range called CryptoKicks.

Full house among speculators

Marketed in a very limited edition, these shoes have the particularity of being customizable through skins to be inserted (virtually) in the basketball. By the way, this allows Nike to do a double blow since it is not only necessary to buy a CryptoKick, but also skins! The success was there for these virtual sneakers associated with NFTs: we find in fact on OpenSea second-hand models over $8,500. As for the skin, it trades above $2,800…

More than $10,000 a pair of virtual sneakers, this is reminiscent of the extravagant prices of certain physical versions! It’s also a way for Nike to mark its territory in a new booming market. The company got it right and quickly found the right formula… to initially attract speculators. It remains to be seen if the sauce will also take on the side of the lambda user.

Once an NFT CryptoKick has been purchased, the enthusiast will be able to put them on (so to speak) in NIKELAND, the metaverse developed by the equipment manufacturer within Roblox. This free space open to all offers mini-games for active users, who can compete using the accelerometer of their smartphones. Medals and trophies can also be won. And of course, there is a shop: avatars can be dressed in branded clothes and shoes.
