Putting a photo sensor in the Apple Watch is definitely something that the manufacturer is working on. A new patent unearthed by Patently Apple thus describes such a component integrated in the digital crown of the watch. Users would thus have the possibility of taking photos or a video from the wrist, by pointing the crown in front of them.
The patent also provides for the possibility of detaching the Apple Watch from its bracelet to use it in flying “camera mode”. We want to say why not, but also… why? As much as we can understand (eventually) the interest for video calls in FaceTime or for FaceTime authentication, but the use cases in camera format seem less obvious.
Patent: Face ID for the Apple Watch
And then given the size and the space available in the case of the Apple Watch, it seems much more difficult to obtain a photo quality similar to that of the iPhone, given all the paraphernalia at the back of smartphones. Anyway, the USPTO has awarded this new patent to Apple, remains to be seen if the manufacturer will want to do something about it.
