Earlier this year, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo first reported that some iPhone 14 models could be introduced with the current A15 Bionic chip – a rumor that was later independently verified. Now, a TrendForce report confirms these rumors by saying that only iPhone 14 Pro models will get the new A16 chip.
In a global smartphone market report released on Wednesday, TrendForce notes that Apple will introduce four new iPhone 14 models in the second half of 2022. However, the research firm says that only the “Pro series” will likely receive the latest processor. with reference to the A16 chip.
Also according to the report, the entry-level iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max models will use the A15 Bionic chip from the iPhone 13, but now with 6GB of LPDDR4X RAM instead of 4GB.
While the idea of Apple releasing a new iPhone with last year’s chip seems odd, it’s not the first time such rumors have surfaced online. Right after Ming-Chi Kuo shared a similar report back in March, he learned from independent sources that indeed only the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will get the new chip.
The reasons are unclear and it is unlikely that Apple will explain this to anyone, but analysts believe that the main reason for this decision is the shortage of chips that the entire industry is suffering from. As a result, Apple will direct its entire supply chain towards the production of more expensive iPhone 14 models.
Recent reports from Nikkei Asia and analyst Jeff Pu said that the production of at least one of the iPhone 14 models is delayed by three weeks. Latency could have been worse if the entry-level iPhone 14 models had more significant hardware changes.
iPhone 14 with A15 chip
It’s worth noting that Apple’s chips have a strong marketing strategy behind them. For example, the well-known M1 chip is, in fact, the A14 Bionic chip with a large number of CPU and GPU cores. Apple could call it the A14X chip, but the M1 name sounds like something really new.
There are currently two different versions of the A15 chip. One with 4 GB of RAM and a five-core GPU, used by the iPhone 13 and iPad mini 6, and the other with 6 GB of RAM and a six-core GPU, used by the iPhone 13 Pro. Since all iPhone 14 models are rumored to have 6GB of RAM, we expect the entry-level versions to get the “high performance” A15 chip.
With that in mind, Apple could even give this chip a new name. The Apple Watch Series 7 has the same processor as the Apple Watch Series 6, but the chips are called “Apple S6” and “Apple S7” due to minor internal changes made to the SoC.
Of course, we won’t have answers to all these questions until the end of this year, when the company announces new iPhones.
