It’s been two years since the Lumen Pocket Metabolic Analyzer was released with a smart iOS app and Apple Health integration. Over the last month, I’ve been using the device again to check out updates like the new food/macro log and the Apple Watch app, as well as the desire to be more intentional with my diet and exercise.

Revisited: Lumen Metabolic Analyzer with Apple Health Support

Background

Lumen is designed for:

Show if your body is using carbs or fat for fuel – in real time. Help you learn what to eat to achieve a goal such as weight loss, fitness or metabolic health. recover from workouts Give you an idea of how flexible your metabolism is

The Lumen Pocket Metabolic Analyzer works with a well-made iOS app that integrates with Apple Health (Android is also available) and takes into account individual goals.

I had a great experience when I first tried Lumen in 2020. My main goal was to build muscle and achieve a rigorous lift, which I achieved about two months after I started using Lumen.

After spending the last two years mostly in maintenance mode with my weight and strength, I thought it would be great to get intentional again with the Lumen along with the latest upgrades it has received.

Lumen metabolic testing technology

Lumen takes what has historically been a large and expensive device found in hospitals or clinics and puts it in the palm of your hand as a portable and fast way to get one or two breath metabolic measurements.

Lumen uses the same Respiratory Rate (RER) metric that typical metabolic analysis devices rely on. Lumen does this with a CO2 sensor, a flow sensor and a patented breathing maneuver. Its ability to accurately match traditional RER tests has been proven in numerous validation studies.

You can read more about how Lumen works here, but here are some of the main benefits of metabolic flexibility.

In use

When you get started with Lumen, the app (iOS and Android) offers three areas: metabolic health, healthy weight loss, and fitness outcomes.

Along with the goal you choose, Lumen asks about your activity level, regular workouts, dietary preferences, sleep, and more. In the process, you can choose to allow Lumen to connect to Apple Health, which automatically retrieves a variety of your data, including weight, BMI, height, workouts, and more.

After completing the Lumen calibration, which learns your unique breathing signature and CO2 range, here’s what it looks like to get your metabolic measurements.

The app uses a 1 to 5 scale to let you know if you’re burning mostly fat, mostly carbs, or both.

Lumen Metabolic Analyzer iOS App

Lumen recommends taking a breath in the morning before a meal or workout to get a baseline metabolic rate for the day, and then you can take additional readings before and after exercise, before and after meals, and before bed.

After you take your morning breath, Lumen will create a personalized meal plan for you for the day with macronutrient recommendations.

Latest Lumen App Updates

New to the Lumen app is an easy-to-use food journal and macro tracker. It’s nice to be able to handle everything right in one app. You can scan food barcodes, manually search for products, and create your own products/recipes.

Another really handy implementation for a food journal is the “All Foods” or “Carbohydrates Only” toggle. This makes it faster and easier for those who focus on carbs, but doesn’t leave out those who prefer to keep track of everything.

Also new since I’ve been using Lumen is the Recipe Guide for great meal inspiration, the built-in option to order ready meals to your door right in the app via Metabolic Meals and the Apple Watch app.

Apple Watch app

The Apple Watch app is a handy way to quickly check your meal plan for the day, what foods you’ve already eaten, and view your latest metabolic rate.

Lumen Metabolic Analyzer Apple Watch App

At the moment, there is no way to record your breath directly with your Apple Watch, you will need to use the iPhone app and a Lumen device to do this.

However, another valuable feature of the Apple Watch Lumen app is recommended macro breakdowns for upcoming meals.

Assessment of metabolic flexibility

After recording several weeks of data, the Lumen app will give you a Flex score. It is based on a scale of 0 to 21, with 21 representing the most flexible metabolism.

Your Flex Score is updated weekly and you will see a trend showing if you are improving your metabolic flexibility over time.

Hardware

Another aspect that was interesting to check was how the equipment itself held up for two years. I was thrilled to see that the battery life is much better than Lumen offers when the device is new (14 day battery).

I’ve only had to charge it once in the last six weeks, after about a month of daily use.

The soft-touch surface of the main body of the device is well preserved, and the USB-C charging dock was a good long-term choice for Lumen.

Lumen comes with a magnetic cover to keep your device clean, along with a travel case.

Overview of the Lumen Metabolic Analyzer

After using the Lumen Metabolic Analyzer for the first time two years ago and learning a lot about nutrition, macronutrients and how my body uses food, I had the idea that I would continue good intentional eating and training practices without regular use. Lumen. .

As it turns out, meeting Lumen again showed how sloppy I had become, especially when it came to overeating at dinner and eating dessert more often than I thought.

I have found that I see the impact of my food choices and activities in real time over and over again every day, and this has pushed me to form healthier habits in line with my current goals.

While I found Lumen to offer a valuable and great experience when it launched, with the latest updates over the past year, the experience has gotten even better.

Lumen costs $299 for 12 months of app access with hardware included. There is also a 6-month option or an 18-month plan, priced at $249 and $349 respectively.

The Lumen Metabolic Analyzer includes a 30-day money-back guarantee if you are dissatisfied for any reason. After the original plan, Lumen costs $25 per month.
