Update from May 31, 2022 (7:30 a.m.): Because there are already more than a million PlayStation 5 owners in Germany alone, the ‘pressure’ on retailers is inevitably not as great as it was half a year ago or even at the beginning of 2021. Nevertheless, it is by no means the case that you simply can walk into the store and pick a PS5 off the pallet.

The reality of summer 2022 looks like this: Sony’s PlayStation 5 is still only available via drop – at most once a month Otto*, Amazon*, Mueller, Saturn*, Mueller and MediaMarkt* plus individual contingents alternates* and specialist retailers such as the play grotto.

As a result, high five-digit contingents regularly reach the market, but of course Sony Interactive could clear sell more consoles – simply because the demand is greater than the available supply.

Means: Unfortunately, it is still necessary to watch the timing of the drops (or to be put on a waiting list at Expert or GameStop). Statistically there is at Amazon* Good chances on Wednesday – whether that will also be the case tomorrow cannot be reliably predicted.

Looking at the past sales campaigns, we think it is most likely that June will start as ‘weak’ as March, April and May – which speaks more for drops from the middle of the month.

The effects of the shipping container congestion in Shanghai are completely incalculable and, according to experts, will only really have an impact in the summer. Because everything that arrives in Rotterdam or Bremerhaven from Asia has been on its way since mid-April at the latest.

Update from May 30, 2022 (10:30 am): Most blockbusters are still released – also – for the PlayStation 4. But the transition to the current generation of consoles has already begun at the leading studios. Most recent example: The Fall order-Successor Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will only be released for PC, Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 in 2023 – so the PS4 will be ‘skipped’.

Similar reports are likely to arrive at higher frequency in the coming weeks and months. Anyone who has hesitated so far should switch over in the coming months in order to really be able to play all the top titles in the future.

Sony’s PlayStation Studios still mostly serve both platforms (see Horizon: Forbidden West, God of War Ragnarok, Gran Turismo 7), but the upcoming PSVR2 games are inevitably only available for the PS5.

The main difference compared to the previous month relates to the ‘missing’ pre-order campaign in the MediaMarkt and Saturn stores: The company has decided to sell the existing contingent via the online shops instead. For the first time since PS5 launched Saturn* and MediaMarkt* also increase the marketing pressure to get rid of the consoles – for example through social media posts. This has never existed in this form before – a clear indication that we are gradually entering a phase of basic care.

Also new: GameStop is back in the PS5 drop business – After a break of almost a year, you could again order the PlayStation 5 on gamestop.de, in this case a Horizon: Forbidden West-Bundle. We assume that this package will appear more often at retailers in the coming days and weeks.

A combination of console plus controller is brand new at Amazon, which to the best of our knowledge has not yet been offered:
