The security company CloudSEK has analyzed a new ransomware which, unlike most other ransomware, does not seem to have been developed to enrich criminals.

The ransomware is called “GoodWill” and locks the files on a user’s computer until the victim has donated enough money or something to the poor and sick. More specifically, it is proposed that the victim should donate clothes to the poor, bring poor children to Pizza Hut and donate money to the poor who need medical care. The good deeds the victim does must also be documented and posted on social media in order for them to receive an encryption key that unlocks their files.

Who is behind GoodWill is unknown, but CloudSEK writes that the ransomware probably originated in India. There is no information on how many people have been affected by GoodWill.
