The Swedish Embracer Group not only collects developer studios, but now also classic video games. The organization has announced an archive for preserving games.

The Embracer Group is currently mainly because of the Acquisition of Western Square Enix Studios Everyone is talking about Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal and Square Enix Montreal. The ever-growing organization now also wants to help preserve classic video games. The group created the Embracer Games Archive to “archive and salvage as much of the video game industry as possible.”

Embracer Group collects games, consoles and accessories

Preserving classic video games seems to be a major concern for the gaming industry, especially this year. In February, Nintendo’s announcement launched the eShop for the 3DS and Wii U consoles to close in March 2023, for an outcry. Thousands of video games would be lost with this step, according to experts.

In April 2022, Sony also dealt with this topic and a preservation team established to preserve classic PlayStation games. The Embracer Group is also based on this idea, but wants to devote itself to the video game industry in general. According to the archive team, there are already 50,000 games, consoles and accessories in Karlstad, Sweden.

However, the initiative stated that in a next phase they plan to create a database of the collection. In the future, they also want to work with initiatives, museums and institutions and support researchers and journalists with inquiries. A long-term goal will be to exhibit parts of the archive locally and elsewhere through satellite exhibitions.
