The Facebook app is now missing one of the most used iOS system features. As many Facebook users have noticed and confirmed, the dark mode option on Facebook for iOS has disappeared without explanation. While this is likely a bug, Facebook has not acknowledged the issue or provided a timeline for fixing it.
Dark mode option disappears from Facebook for iOS
Facebook users have taken to other social media platforms such as Twitter to complain about the sudden disappearance of dark mode support. This includes Facebook’s support for a system-wide dark mode toggle in iOS, as well as an in-app dark mode toggle that used to be available in the Settings menu of the Facebook app itself.
This means that not only will Facebook no longer honor your system-wide dark mode settings, but it will no longer be able to manually enable dark mode directly from within the Facebook app. This isn’t a major bug, but it can result in a pretty drastic visual inconsistency, especially if you have system-wide dark mode enabled on your iPhone or iPad.
System-wide dark mode support arrived in iOS as part of the iOS 13 release in 2019. As we’ve come to expect from the company, Facebook has taken its time to roll out support for this feature. Facebook dark mode support didn’t actually launch until late June 2020, a year after Apple announced iOS 13 with dark mode as a top feature.
There is no reason to think that Facebook has intentionally removed dark mode support from its iOS app. The company does not provide release notes for any updates it releases for Facebook for iOS, but updates are released approximately every 5-7 days. It’s likely that one of these recent updates also included a change that caused dark mode to disappear from the Facebook iOS app by mistake.
