Even a year and a half after the official launch of the console, the PlayStation 5 is still only available with a lot of luck. As Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Jim Ryan promised in a recent business meeting, fixing the supply bottlenecks is “top priority” for Sony.
Since the official launch of the new consoles in November 2020, both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X/S have been struggling with supply bottlenecks around the world.
If new consoles find their way onto the market, the manageable contingents are usually sold out within a very short time. A topic that Sony Interactive Entertainment’s CEO and President Jim Ryan addressed in a recent business meeting. As Ryan promised, fixing the supply bottlenecks for Sony and Sony Interactive Entertainment is the top priority. Various strategies are currently being pursued to eliminate the supply bottlenecks.
First, Sony will rely on multiple suppliers for “greater agility in unstable market conditions.” There is also talk of “ongoing logistical negotiations” which, according to Ryan, will help to “maintain an optimal PS5 delivery route”.
PS5 sales are losing momentum
As Ryan conceded later in the conversation, the supply shortages are having a negative impact on PlayStation 5 sales and are causing the console’s sales to lose momentum in its second year. While the PlayStation 5 managed to outsell the PlayStation 4’s sales for the same period in the first year after launch, the PS5 lagged behind the PS4’s numbers in the second year due to supply shortages.
More news on the topic:
If everything goes as planned in terms of shipment volumes in the future, Sony Interactive Entertainment expects the PlayStation 5 to sell at the same level as the PlayStation 4 in its third year and to surpass the PS4’s sales in its fourth year.
Near-term risks currently worrying Sony Interactive Entertainment leaders include the impact of the current COVID-19 lockdowns in China and the conflict in Ukraine.
