Update from December 14, 2021: The suspicion was confirmed: the DualSense controllers in the three new colors are at the price level of the Cosmic Red model at €74.99. At individual dealers such as Amazon* the controllers are already listed, but cannot be pre-ordered yet.
Update from December 13, 2021: Starting in January, Sony Interactive will launch three new controller colors: Turquoise (Starlight Blue), Purple (Galactic Purple) and Pink.
The Galactic Purple DualSense gamepad will be available initially exclusively directly from Sony Interactive via PlayStation Direct starting January 14th. From February 11th you will also be able to buy this variant in regular shops.
Prices have not yet been determined – but there is much to suggest that the three new variants are based on the tariff for the Cosmic Red variant (approx. €75). For individual senders such as Amazon* you can already put the controllers on the watch list.
The DualSense Wireless Controller is included with every PlayStation 5. The gamepad is the successor to the almost legendary DualShock controller that was used up to and including the PlayStation 4.
What has remained is the basic arrangement of the buttons, triggers and joysticks, as millions of video game fans are used to since the PlayStation 2. Inside, however, a small revolution has taken place: Instead of the usual rumble functions, the DualSense controller has haptic feedback, motion sensors, gyroscope, dynamic adaptive triggers, plus touchpad, microphone and loudspeaker. Anyone who ever likes a specifically customized game Returnal, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, Demon’s Souls or Resident Evil: Village tried it, every other gamepad looks like a pre-war model.
For example, the gamepad simulates the recoil of weapons, pressing the brake pedal on board a Formula 1 car or pulling a bowstring in a previously unknown way. Even the subsoil – metal, wood, grass – can be felt. After just a few minutes with the pre-installed Jump & Run Astro’s Playroom the massive differences compared to conventional input devices become apparent.
The compact DualSense controller measures 16 centimeters wide and 10.6 centimeters high, is 6.6 centimeters deep and weighs 280 grams.
A headset or stereo headphones can also be connected to the controller. With the create button, game moments can be captured in the form of screenshots and videos and shared with friends.
Please note: The DualSense controller is a mandatory requirement for PlayStation 5 games – the ‘old’ DualShock controllers are incompatible. Existing DualShock controllers can still be used for PS4 games – almost all of which also work on the PS5.
The DualShock controller was previously only available in white with black applications – from June 18, two new models in black (Midnight Black) and wine red (Cosmic Red) will follow. The prices are between 69.99 euros and 79.99 euros.
The accompanying charging station, which offers space for two gamepads, is recommended as the ideal complement to the PlayStation 5 DualSense Wireless Controller. In addition to the original docking station from Sony Interactive for around 35 euros, there are plenty of inexpensive replicas on the market for less than 20 euros, but the quality sometimes leaves a lot to be desired.
There are good customer reviews for the following models, among others:
- Snakebyte PS5 Twin Charge 5 (about 18 euros) – to order*
- REAL Power PS5 controller charging station (approx. 20 euros) – to order*
- Oivo PS5 controller charging station (about 16 euros) – to order*
- HeyStop PS5 controller charging station (about 16 euros) – to order*
