Sweden’s five icebreakers have had more to do this winter than last winter, despite milder weather, the Swedish Maritime Administration writes in a press release.

The icebreakers have worked in the Gulf of Bothnia and the Northern Kvarken, unusually farther south than Örnsköldsvik. The ice has not been so widespread but on the other hand very concentrated. With thick ice in the north and several windy periods, it has been full.

“When the Gulf of Bothnia became completely frozen, a storm came and pressed the ice against Finland. It became like an armor band of ice along the entire Finnish coast,” says Anders Dahl, icebreaker manager at the Swedish Maritime Administration, in the press release.

The number of bets landed at 694 this season, compared to 630 the season before.

“When there is a lot of wind, it places higher demands on us. We need to be in more places and have higher preparedness,” says Anders Dahl.

In total, the icebreakers were out on relief missions for over 67 days during the season.
