McDonald’s has finally decided to leave Russia for good, while Vladimir Putin threatens NATO forces.
After Netflix, Nintendo and many others, the flight of multinationals from Russia continues. Long reluctant to leave the country, it’s McDonald’s turn to announce the end of its activity in the territory. In a press release, the fast-food giant finally estimated: “The humanitarian crisis caused by the war in Ukraine and the unpredictable operating environment it has precipitated have led McDonald’s to conclude that it is no longer possible to continue to hold a business in Russia, and that it is not consistent with McDonald’s values”.
Until now, the firm had condemned the Russian occupation, but struggled to close its few 850 franchised brands, for fear of being confronted with legal recourse against him. This time, things seem to have changed. A few months after the start of the Ukrainian invasion, the American company is now looking for buyers to resume its activity in Russia, and thus save employees from forced layoff.
Moscow has made its own version of McDonald’s:

McDonald’s knows however that it will lose big in the affair: the firm already quantifies its losses between $1.2 and $1.4 billion, not to mention currency losses. For its part, Russia could bet on the Oncle Vania channel, whose logo and visual identity are quite clearly similar to the American giant.
Putin threatens with sanctions
Along with the various trade sanctions, Vladimir Putin also hit the nail on the head of NATO. The Russian president said on Monday that the accessions of Finland and Sweden would push the Kremlin to consider a military response. A few days ago, the two Nordic countries submitted applications to join the military organization formed by the alliance of European and North American countries. Putin believes that a favorable response would not directly pose a threat, but would require a strong reaction.
