Only a short time ago, the big blockbusters appeared on a weekly basis: “Dying Light 2”, “Elden Ring”, “Horizon: Forbidden West” and “Gran Turismo 7” are just a few of the titles that made the first months of the 2022 calendar year sweeter for you.
But then came the big pickle season! The higher the temperatures rose outside, the fewer really big productions came onto the market. Even the Easter business was comparatively manageable this time.
Do you actually enjoy the peace and quiet and maybe work through some titles from your “Pile of Shame”? In any case, we use this time to go through the release lists and news again. Which top hits can we look forward to?
At this point it should of course be said: All information without guarantee. If the past two years have taught us anything, it’s that release delays sometimes come faster than we’d all like.
EA Sports F1 22
Developer: Codemasters
release: July 01, 2022
Also included: adjustments in the career and in MeinTeam, supercars, sprint races, track upgrades, adaptive AI pilots and F1 Life as a virtual lobby. Even if “F1 22” is ultimately just another racing game, the first test rounds were great fun and it should pick up experts and newcomers alike on July 1st, 2022.
Stray
Developer: Blue Twelve Studios
release: 2022
The cat adventure “Stray” should have been released in 2021, but then the circumstances of the corona pandemic thwarted the development team at BlueTwelve Studios. We now know that “Stray” will come at least this year.
The game caused quite a stir when it was announced, as it combines two internet darlings: cats and a derelict science fiction metropolis. The game draws a dense and detailed picture of the cyber city, which you can roam, explore and experience on quiet paws. During the course you will receive support from the drone B12.
We are particularly curious to see whether BlueTwelve Studios can turn the creative setting, including the unusual main character, into a good game.
A Plague Tale: Requiem
Developer: Asobo Studios
release: 2022
The French Asobo Studios landed a surprise hit with “A Plague Tale: Innocence”, which not only convinced players but also critics. However, the game was released in 2019 and since then the community has been waiting for the successor to the dark medieval action-adventure.
“A Plague Tale: Requiem” includes the events of the first part: The young Amicia and Hugo flee to the south of the country and hope to escape the supernatural threats. But of course, the past is catching up with them, and so only an ancient prophecy offers a little hope of breaking the curse.
“A Plague Tale: Requiem” is again a mix of storytelling, stealth and action passages. We are already expecting a first taste in June 2022, when a playable demo of the upcoming action-adventure should be released.
Saints Row
Developer: volition
release: August 25, 2022
Developer Volition dares to reboot the former “GTA” killer: In “Saints Row” you are in the city of Santo Ileso and, not surprisingly, you have to form the Saints and build up new strength.
In addition to extensive customization options for your “boss” and your own gang, you can expect a lot of open-world craziness, creatively weird weapons and vehicles and plenty of opportunities to start your own criminal business.
It remains to be seen how well these gears mesh. So far, Volition has presented gameplay footage, but we’re still waiting for a hands-on session.
Hogwarts legacy
Developer: Avalanche Studios
release: December 2022
Going to school at Hogwarts, walking through the corridors and joining one of the houses – this wish finally becomes reality with the open-world action role-playing game.
“Hogwarts Legacy” is a prequel to the big films or books and takes place in the 19th century at the time of the impending goblin uprisings. So heroes like Harry Potter are not included in the game. But you can look forward to popular leisure activities such as broom racing.
Otherwise, “Hogwarts Legacy” should be an exciting action role-playing game mix in a fantastic world.
Forspoken
Developer: Luminous Productions
release: October 11, 2022
Speaking of witches and fantastic worlds: the open-world action role-playing game “Forspoken” is also in the starting blocks. In the game developed by Luminous Productions, outsider Frey Holland is thrown into the fantasy world of Athia. However, the kingdom is haunted by a mysterious power that threatens the people there.
Frey has to track down this plague. To do this, she uses witch magic, which she performs with hand signals and an enchanted bracelet. Their superhuman abilities also affect navigation within the game world, allowing you to quickly change positions and levels.
EA Sports FIFA 23
Developer: EA Sports
release: not yet known
Now the cat is out of the bag: With “FIFA 23” a decade-long tradition ends – namely the cooperation between the football association FIFA and EA Sports. From this point on, the series is called “EA Sports FC”. However, nothing serious should change in terms of orientation. EA Sports promised that apart from possible World Cup game modes, all licenses will also be on board in the coming years.
How the series will change this year and beyond remains to be seen. However, we expect that “FIFA” will top the sales charts under this name for the last time and will be one of the most popular games of the year. The release should (as usual) fall in October.
Gotham Knights
Developer: Warner Bros. Games Montreal
release: October 25, 2022
The dark knight is history – Batman is dead. In his place, Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood and Robin are to ensure law and order on the streets of Gotham City. “Gotham Knights” is an open-world action role-playing game that wants to convince comic fans in both single player and online co-op.
Similar to previous “Batman” games, the adventure developed by Warner Bros. Games Montréal combines exploring a huge game world with crisp fights and all kinds of puzzles. The abilities of the four heroes are of course the focus.
However, there is still a small drop of bitterness: As was recently announced, “Gotham Knights” will not be released for the old generation of consoles, but only for PlayStation 5.
Final Fantasy XVI
Developer: Square Enix
release: (hopefully) 2022
“Final Fantasy” and the PlayStation – This is known to be a long and enormously successful story. And many fans are eagerly awaiting the latest offshoot of the series, which will initially appear as a time-exclusive for the PlayStation 5. Whether “Final Fantasy XVI” will be released in 2022 is still in the stars.
Producer Naoki Yoshida recently announced that development of the game is almost complete. So nothing stands in the way of an early release. At the same time, the Japanese role-playing game was quiet for a long time, so doubts arose among fans and experts. First and foremost, journalist Jason Schreier spoke up, expecting a release in 2023.
No matter how: When “Final Fantasy XVI” appears in 2022, it should be one of the most important exclusive games of the year.
God of War: Ragnarok
Developer: Santa Monica Studios
release: 2022
And while we’re on the subject of exclusive games, last but not least we mustn’t forget God of War: Ragnarok. Santa Monica Studio is busy working on the completion of the action game. The predecessor, released in 2018, is still considered the flagship for modern reboots and one of the best games of recent years.
What awaits you here? You dive back into Norse mythology with Kratos and his son Atreus and explore the nine worlds. With the looming Ragnarok in mind, you must discover what role Atreus plays in these events.
Of course, Kratos again has Leviathanaxe, Chaos Blades, Guardian Shield and Spartan forces in his luggage – after all, “God of War” is and will always be a thoroughbred action game.
Now it’s your turn: Which upcoming game are you most looking forward to? Have you already pre-ordered one? Write your opinion in the comments and discuss with the community.
