According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Apple is testing iPhones with USB-C ports instead of Lightning. Apple doesn’t plan to switch from Lightning to USB-C until at least 2023, and iPhones will still feature a Lightning port this year.

For the first time about a possible transition to USB-C became known from an Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuowho said this week that Apple plans to ditch the Lightning port in favor of a USB-C port in models iPhone 15 2023.
There have been rumors over the years that Apple is working on a USB-C port, especially since it’s been used on the iPad. However, Apple still uses Lightning on the iPhone.
The switch to USB-C is possibly due to legal requirements in Europe. The European Union is working on legislation that will require Apple to use USB-C technology in all of its products: iPhone, iPad and AirPods.
If the law is passed, all devices sold in Europe will be required to have a universal USB-C port, so Apple will need to release special “iPhone” models with USB-C in Europe.
USB-C ports will provide faster charging speeds and faster data transfers, as well as bring the iPhone in line with Mac and iPad models that already use USB-C.
Gurman says that if Apple moves to USB-C, the company will release an adapter that will allow iPhones with USB-C to connect to accessories with Lightning ports.
