The European football organization UEFA has voted through a change in the format of their biggest club team tournament Champions League. This means, among other things, that 36 teams instead of the current 32 will participate in the Champions League from 2024/2025.

In addition to more teams, the way the tournament is played also changes. From 2024/2025, the tournament will begin with a basic series where all teams can play eight matches. The eight teams that play together the most points in the basic series then go on directly to the round of 16. The remaining 28 teams will then settle in a playoff game for the remaining eight places to the quarterfinals.

The four new places in the Champions League will be distributed in different ways. Two of the places will go to the countries whose clubs performed best in the European Games last year. One place will go to the league whose leagues are ranked fifth in Europe while the last place will go to the pool for champion teams in the smaller leagues that have no direct place in the tournament, for example Sweden.
