Last night Electronic Arts officially announced From the FIFA series and its own branded sequel, EA SPORTS FC. A little later, FIFA also spoke up and confirmed that they wanted to bring several of their own video games onto the market in the future.
The FIFA license was previously reserved exclusively for EA, but that has now been done with yesterday’s announcement of the independent EA SPORTS FC from 2023. FIFA itself has now also spoken out in a press release and confirmed that it intends to diversify the brand significantly more in the games sector in the future.
Accordingly, FIFA now wants to launch several new football video games together with third-party developers and publishers in order to give football and game fans more choices. In the run-up to the FIFA World Cup in Qatar at the end of 2022, new games are to be released which – in contrast to the FIFA series – should not be attributed to the football simulation genre. There should also be playful opportunities with regard to the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 in Australia and New Zealand.
Several games outside of the football simulations are already in production and will be released in the third quarter of 2022. One of them will focus on the World Cup in Qatar and will provide “new interactive experiences”.
Meanwhile, FIFA also confirmed that a short-term extension of the license agreement had been decided with EA, so that the previous publisher will bring FIFA 23 to the market this year – i.e. a football simulation like you from the last decades of EA are used to. The football world championships for both men and women will then also be held here as a playable competition.
From 2024, however, FIFA wants to go its own way and seek talks with publishers, developer studios and investors in order to launch its own football simulation under the FIFA branding.
It remains to be seen with which developer FIFA will agree on a football simulation in the future – and whether the new title can seriously compete with EA SPORTS FC after Konami failed across the board with its last title in the genre.
