Yoshi-P claims he was working on a game that was “basically Bloodborne.” But then he was called away to help redesign Final Fantasy XIV.

Naoki Yoshida, the producer of Final Fantasy XIV and the coming one “Final Fantasy XVI”, has written a regular column for Famitsu for the past several years, titled “Yoshida Uncensored.” His entries were collected in a book in 2018 and the publication of the work was celebrated with a new interview.

Part of the interview has now received renewed attention in the Resetera forum. According to the report, Yoshi-P, Assistant Director Hiroshi Takai, and Lead UI Artist Horishi Minagawa have previously worked on a project that “basically Bloodborne“ was.

Yoshi-P reportedly worked on multiplayer hardcore action game

In the interview, the three developers speak of a “hardcore action game for the western market” that they originally worked on in 2010. However, during the development of the project, they were called away to help redesign Final Fantasy XIV.

“It was similar to Bloodborne,” Hiroshi Takai said when asked about the genre of the canceled project. Yoshida adds that it was a “hardcore action game” and not an RPG. “If we’d gone ahead and Bloodborne released first, we’d probably be freaking out now,” said lead UI artist Horishi Minagawa. According to Takai, the game would have even used the same weapons as “Bloodborne” and would have been done in a similar gothic style.

However, according to Yoshida, the project would have included some sci-fi elements as well. Another difference is that the title should be an asymmetric multiplayer game. In the interview, the project is “Evolve” compared. Four players would have played together in a team, while another player would have embodied some kind of “killer” or “villain”.

More news on the subject:

Yoshida, Takai, and Minagawa were pulled from the project, which apparently didn’t even have a title or codename, to work on A Realm Reborn, the remastered version of the original Final Fantasy XIV. Interestingly, the three developers have now reunited to create Final Fantasy XVI together.
