MusicKit is an official Apple API that allows developers to build applications, such as third-party clients, with access to Apple Music. For some unknown reason, the company removed the ability to let these apps control the playback speed, but the feature will now return with iOS 15.5.
Since this API was removed in iOS 15.4, several developers have complained about it to Apple. An Apple engineer said at the time that the company was “monitoring this issue internally,” but no details were given. Fortunately, developers can use this API again.
As noted by iGeneration, the same Apple engineer confirmed on the Apple Developer forum that the Apple Music team “revisited our previous decision” to disable the feature. As a result, the API that allows Apple Music apps to change the playback speed has returned in iOS 15.5 Beta 4, which is currently available to developers.
We’ve revisited our previous decision to disable Apple Music subscription content playback speed changes in third-party apps, and we’ve come to the conclusion that we can safely re-enable this functionality as we did prior to iOS 15.4. So this issue is fixed in iOS 15.5 beta 4.

It’s unclear what prompted Apple to remove the feature, but since the company’s engineer used the word “safe” to describe the problem, it’s possible that the feature was disabled due to a bug. Of course, developers will now have to update their apps for this feature to work after the official release of iOS 15.5.
