Developed by Bad Vices Games and published by Troglobytes Games, Ravenous Devils hit the Xbox store on April 29. We discover that the title is listed in Horror Cooking Simulator, as what, there is something for everyone in the video game world. Let’s find out as soon as possible what the Italian studio has in store for us, a fan of excessive hemoglobin splashes in its games. Be careful though because Ravenous Devils is classified PEGI 18, sensitive souls abstain!
At Percival and Hildred
The game begins with a cinematic plunging us into a Victorian atmosphere, with pronounced black humor. Indeed, Percival and Hildred, buy the shop of a renowned hairdresser in a small village. The business borders the river and consists of two floors, which is ideal for our couple of buyers. The husband plans to open a tailor’s shop and his wife a pub. Their goal ? Collect as much money as possible and become rich! Until then, we can think that for our wealth-hungry entrepreneurs, all means are good to make a fortune and that there are no small savings. That’s good, our couple will apply this principle to the letter: Percival kills in series the customers of his shop and Hildred recycles their flesh in good dishes for his customers. Unfortunately, the small business will experience a few minor problems. The spouses receive a letter informing them that their terrible secret has been discovered. However, the blackmailer will not denounce them, because he likes to eat human flesh! This person signing his letters with a J- asks us to assassinate a designated person and keep the body, in order to organize a feast. Our first mission begins, and it won’t be the last.
In its proposal, Ravenous Devils is neither more nor less than a management game. We must constantly focus on the supply of resources, which we transform into products purchased by consumers, except that some consumers themselves become resources, and so on, the loop starts again endlessly. Some subtleties appear during the game, because we can add tables in our pub, so that customers order specific meals. Indeed, the cooking recipes, which are 19 in number, can evolve according to the products that we unlock such as tomatoes or eggs. It’s a shame that the pub part is more elaborate than that of the tailor, because the latter only asks us to recover fabric from the corpses, in order to reuse it on a sewing machine to make new clothes. For example, we will never have a specific order for a suit or a dress.
The difficulty increases as the game progresses, because the more we expand the restaurant, the more customers there will be, the more recipes we unlock and the more varied they become. Recipe-specific products force us to juggle between our two protagonists. Percival takes care, in addition to being a tailor, of the “natural” soil and the growth of the vegetables, while Hildred has to juggle between serving customers in the fast food restaurant and those in the restaurant. Our little fingers and our memory are put to the test and we sometimes forget a command, but nothing serious, the game remains quite accommodating. With the money collected from the sales, we can improve both shops. Increasing the number of displays, adding tables for customers, repairing an oven or even hiring a waiter are just some of the many upgrades available. It is even possible to change the outfit of our two lovers. Which seems logical, who would want to buy or eat from a person in rags? It should be noted that the game is entirely in English when it is released. For non-followers of Shakespeare’s language, the dialogues remain easy to understand and the plot of the story understandable. Good news, the studio has just communicated that the localization of the text is in progress in different languages, including French.
Whistling while working…
It’s time to address the grip of the title. From the beginning, we notice that the game was designed to be played on PC. The cursor is symbolized by a red aura and interactions pass highlighted objects. We move between floors either with LB and LT or with the D-Pad, which feels like a more natural manipulation to us. After a little time to adapt, the interactions are simpler and the fact that our characters record an additional action in addition to the one he performs makes everything smoother. The soundtrack remains pleasant and fits perfectly into the game, without being haunting. It even seems jovial, contrasting frankly with the context of the game. As for the artistic direction, it is… to everyone’s taste. Graphically speaking, it is very beautiful. The details are teeming, the actions of the characters moving on the paintings are very fluid, the lighting very good. But the blood is everywhere, and seeing Hildred dismember a man or a woman to make steaks and sausages, while humming, could be uncomfortable. Let’s not forget that the game is rated PEGI 18, and it’s not for nothing.
G score lovers will be delighted to learn that the unlocking of achievements is done in a single game, of approximately ten hours. If some have not managed to do them all, you should know that we can continue playing after the end of the story. Only one achievement is currently ununlockable, Honest Work (10G), although the developers have promised that the issue will be fixed via an update soon.
