Customers in India can no longer use a debit or credit card to subscribe and purchase apps using their Apple ID. This means they can no longer purchase apps from the App Store, subscribe to Apple services, or purchase any Apple media with credit or debit.

Customers must now add money to their Apple funds as if they were on a prepaid card. According to The News Minute, the money will be debited from their account every month as their subscription is renewed. Any new Apple users will need to add their bank information when they manually create a new Apple ID during device setup.

From the Apple support site on April 18:

Regulatory requirements in India apply to the processing of recurring transactions. If you have an Indian debit or credit card and have a subscription, these changes will affect your transactions. Some transactions may be rejected by banks and card issuers. To continue using your subscriptions, you can pay for them with your Apple ID balance. You can top up your Apple ID balance using App Store, Net Banking, and UPI codes.

Twitter users complained – some even received error messages saying “This card type is no longer supported.” User @kgvarunkanth shared a screenshot of the remaining three payment methods.

It started in October 2021

The news comes after the introduction of new auto-debit rules from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) last year. Due to new regulations, banks now require customer approval through “Additional Authentication Factors (AFA)” for recurring transactions such as subscriptions. If not approved through AFA, the transaction will be rejected.

The new rules also say that Apple must establish an electronic mandate for customer cards. Apple customers in India will need to use two-factor authentication and set up a new e-credential when making recurring payments. They will also be required to give consent for every purchase over Rs 5,000.

Following this announcement, Apple warned developers that the best way to promote payments through their apps is to use the customer’s Apple ID balance. Developers can also enable a billing grace period to give customers time to correct their billing information if they are unable to complete a transaction.

This seems to be an inconvenience for customers in India. While I’m glad they still have access to Apple media, unfortunately it’s not as easy as it used to be. Despite these conditions coming from the RBI, I hope that Apple can make the process easier for these customers in the future.
