Microsoft today announced that the popular multiplayer game Fortnite is now available through Xbox Cloud Gaming, which means that iPhone and iPad users can play Fortnite for free with just a Microsoft account.

Fortnite is the first free-to-play game that has been added to Xbox Cloud Gaming, which is currently only available in beta, and not in Russia. Xbox Cloud Gaming is available in 26 countries, and Fortnite can be played not only on iPhone and iPad, but also on Android smartphones and tablets, as well as on Windows computers.

There is no installation required as Xbox Cloud Gaming is a browser-based streaming service and no subscription is required as Fortnite itself is free. The game supports touch controls or a connected controller.

With Fortnite available through Xbox Cloud Gaming, iPhone and iPad users who haven’t been able to play Fortnite on their mobile devices since the game was removed from the App Store will be able to access it again.

Cloud gaming service GeForce NOW is also beta testing Fortnite support on iPhone and iPad, but it’s only available in closed beta there. Fortnite via Xbox Cloud Gaming is available to anyone with a Microsoft account.

Apple has no plans to bring Fortnite back to the App Store while litigation with Epic Games continues, so cloud gaming is the only way to access the popular game on iOS devices.
