Seagate Firecuda: Star Wars themed external hard drives

Seagate presented external hard drives with this theme for the “Anniversary” of Star Wars. The Firecuda drives are decorated with motifs from Grogu, the Mandalorian and Boba Fett, among others. You shouldn’t expect a technical hyper leap, but the prices are moderate. The two terabyte drives are equipped with USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5 gigabits per second), which has a Micro-B interface. The 2.5-inch external hard drives rotate at 5,400 revolutions per minute and can thus move a maximum of 140 megabytes per second. What some experienced users will find more annoying is the use of SMR.

SMR stands for Shingled Magnetic Recording and means that the data is written “overlapping” and “shingled”. This works well as long as you use the drive as a disposable data grab where information is parked and occasionally retrieved. However, if you want to write material back and forth more frequently, you will find that the drives lose writing speed, because the shingled storage of the data then leads to considerable additional work. Alternatively, you have to resort to CMR drives that store the data conventionally. Unfortunately, hard drive manufacturers are not very generous with such information, which generally complicates things. Western Digital was sued and paid $2.7 million in damages.

In the US, the Star Wars drives are available for $109 plus VAT. The product has not yet been listed anywhere in Germany. In the price comparison, the three motifs are at least listed in the database, but still without dealers: groguto the Mandalorian and Boba Fett. The drives are not available on Amazon and are said to cost 170 euros.
