This Monday morning, Embracer Group announced the acquisition of Square Enix’s North American division, which includes the Tomb Raider franchise. Current sales figures for the “Tomb Raider” brand were given in line with this takeover.








This Monday morning, Embracer Group executives surprised the world of video games by announcing that the company would take over Square Enix’s North American division for around $300 million.

With this deal, not only studios like Crystal Dynamics or Eidos Montreal are changing hands. Embracer Group also owns more than 50 brands. These include the “Tomb Raider” franchise, for which current sales figures were given in the course of the takeover. According to official sources, the various “Tomb Raider” titles have sold around 88 million copies worldwide.

The reboot trilogy, which consists of “Tomb Raider” (2013), “Rise of the Tomb Raider” (2015) and “Shadow of the Tomb Raider” (2018) and it brings to more than 38 million games sold. Added to this are 53 million downloads of various Tomb Raider titles on the mobile platforms.



New project already in the works

As announced earlier this month, Crystal Dynamics developers have started work on a new Tomb Raider project. Aside from the fact that the title is based on Unreal Engine 5 and without the support created by Rhianna Pratchett, unfortunately no specific details have been given so far. Recently, however, it has been speculated that we are dealing with it here a remake might have to do.
