Anyone who has currently looked around in the Stardew Valley subreddit may have wondered about the many grandpa mods. This is a running gag that has lasted for a few days and in which users keep trying to outdo each other with completely wacky ideas.
The friendly players of the farm hit Stardew Valley are currently showing their funny side. For the past few days, they’ve been flooding the game’s subreddit with mods based on a short scene in the opening credits. There, the grandfather is seen on his deathbed, bequeathing the farm to his grandchildren. A user created a mod that makes Grandpa’s bed look even more shabby than it already is in the normal game. But that started a wave of increasingly absurd grandpa bed mods.
Running gag has been around for a few days
The idea behind the mods is actually based on a much older inside joke among gamers. Already after the release of Stardew Valley, some users wondered about the strange graphics of the grandfather’s bed. This looked very flimsy and uncomfortable from the start. The joke about the bad place to sleep lasted for years.
The user “switchswatchh” already made the mod on April 19th “Slightly worse Grandpa bed”, where one leg of the bed broke off. As a result, other players also created such mods and graphics. For example, mods followed in which grandpa is already lying on the floor smelly and surrounded by flies or a modification in which grandpa himself is the bed. Other examples of the joke are a mod in which grandpa is in the envelope that the players receive from him in the intro, or a mod in which only the bed can be seen without grandpa.
Also popular is a modification where grandpa is in the death pose from Family Guy. This idea has now been further developed, so that in another mod the grandpa was replaced by a beat-up Peter Griffin. Another user made a mod on the carpenter Robin from Stardew Valley actually the grandpa is. She signed over the farm to the players in order to be able to sell them more buildings.
