Social media offer people a virtual space to develop and to share their own experiences with others. Unfortunately, it cannot be said of all users that they take the necessary care and recognize their influence on other people. The American Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has therefore revoked an athlete’s pilot’s license due to an irresponsible video on YouTube.
Youtuber, athlete and pilot Trevor Jacob, who represented the United States as a snowboarder at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, posted a video on YouTube in December last year in which he parachuted out of his flying plane. At the time, his historic machine from 1940 seemed to have engine problems. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and other authorities have now cast doubt on Jacob’s story and sharply criticized his actions.

Above all, the authority criticized the fact that he had a “showed a lack of care, judgment and responsibility by deciding to jump out of an airplane.” He should have previously tried to restart the engine, informed air traffic control and search for alternative landing sites. This could have saved the plane and minimized risks.
Doubts were also expressed about his account of the incident. He appears to have opened the door of the plane before the propeller slowed down and was wearing a parachute, which is also not normal. The condition of the aircraft is actually rather bad and a defect is possible.
The FAA is said to have informed Jacob in a letter that his pilot’s license had been revoked and that he would have to pay daily fines of more than $1,000 until it was officially handed in. Jacob himself seemed surprised by these allegations and subsequently stopped all communication with the media.
