After the virtual end of support for macOS Server millennia ago, Apple officially ended the $20 server feature set for Mac users. Today, the company broke some bad news for macOS Server fans in a support document:

As of April 21, 2022, Apple has ended support for macOS Server. Existing macOS Server customers can continue to download and use the app with macOS Monterey.

For many, the big surprise is not that macOS Server is gone, but that the standalone app is still on sale. As Apple notes in a support document, several server-side features have found their way into recent versions of macOS:

The most popular server features—Cache Server, File Sharing Server, and Time Machine Server—are included with every installation of macOS High Sierra and later, so more customers can access these important services at no additional cost.

macOS Server, which received an average rating of 1.5 stars in the App Store, has received minimal compatibility updates once or twice a year for the past few years. The current app does not work on future versions of macOS, although Apple says existing customers can continue to use macOS Server on macOS Monterey.

Now macOS Server can move to the place where discontinued Apple technologies run by joining Xserve and AirPort.
