Last month, Sega said to be on the floor on a long-term project, with a somewhat vague name and concept: Great Game. A kind of label that will bring together future AAA games of the historical publisher with the firm intention of using all kinds of very modern technologiesfrom gaming services to streaming via – perhaps – NFTs, the journalist Jason Schreier claims for Bloomberg’s account that the first games in development would be reboots of Crazy Taxi and Jet-Set Radio.
The game Crazy Taxi in question would be in internal development from about a yearwhile the initiative Great Game was announced a few months later. If all goes well, the title should come out in two or three yearsbut given the nebulous side of the project, Schreier’s sources indicate that these games could be canceled even before being officially announced. Sega will not comment on rumors around these reboots.
Incidentally, the ambitious multiplayer FPS of The Creative Assembly (Total War) would indeed be part of the project Great Game.
We have absolutely no idea what it will look like this reboot cult Dreamcast licensesbut it is clear that Sega relies on their popularity to attempt an incursion into the world of ultra-connected AAA.
With the pandemic which had a huge impact on revenue arcade machines and pachinko in JapanSega would attempt a clear bifurcation of its activities, embodied by the Super Game bet. Strongly influenced by the economic and social model of Fortnitethe publisher would therefore explore ways optimize revenue generation of the same game.
Although the Super Game initiative tick all the buzzwords dear to investors, it now remains to be seen whether fans of these licenses and curious gamers find themselves there, and this in the long term.
