The Mass Effect Legendary Edition has given the sci-fi trilogy a new lease of life, but the basic structure has remained the Unreal Engine 3. Now that Unreal Engine 5 has been released, a fan shows how great the world of Mass Effect could look in the new engine.
On May 14, 2021, newcomers and long-time Mass Effect fans were able to experience a new version of the sci-fi trilogy about Commander Shepard: The Mass Effect Legendary Edition gave the aging games a new coat of paint and also expanded them by quite a few Gameplay adjustment (especially part 1). But despite the prettier paintwork: Unreal Engine 3 continues to work under the hood in the Legendary Edition, which of course has its technical limits. But what could Mass Effect look like if you were to rely on the newly released Unreal Engine 5 and its technical innovations? A hard-working fan proved this in a video by recreating part of the iconic Omega space station from parts 2 and 3.
Omega from Mass Effect with Unreal Engine 5
The Youtuber named Torres had previously recreated Dragon Age 3 in Unreal Engine 5, now it’s Mass Effect’s turn. Thanks to new perks like the Nanite technique, he multiplies objects in the level environment without much effort. And the whole thing is staged particularly beautifully, since the Unreal Engine 5 relies on global lighting through “Lumen”:
Mass Effect 5 will be based on Unreal
It is already clear that the next part will actually be based on the Unreal Engine. We’ll be happy to tell you why that’s great in an extra article! The game series is thus returning to its technical roots – part 4 called Mass Effect: Andromeda relied on the Frostbyte Engine like Dragon Age: Inquisition. By the way, not much is known about the next part of Mass Effect, which will not appear to be a sequel to Andromeda, and will bring back some of the studio’s developer veterans.
