Joel actor Pedro Pascal consciously dealt little with the games

In an interview, actor Pedro Pascal spoke about the way he was preparing for his role as Joel on HBO’s The Last of Us. As Pascal explained, the two “The Last of Us” games only played a supporting role.

HBO is currently developing a TV series based on Naughty Dog’s cult series “The Last of Us”. The first season of the TV series is set to launch in early 2023, as things currently stand, and will largely focus on the events of the first The Last of Us video game.

In a recent interview, actor Pedro Pascal – who will be playing protagonist Joel in the TV series The Last of Us – opened up about the way he was preparing for his role. As Pascal acknowledged, he never actually played the two The Last of Us titles himself, and instead just watched his nephew play.

The Joel actor went on to say that he deliberately spent little time on The Last of Us games to avoid over-mimicking the way Joel was portrayed in the video game template.

The video game template is to be respected

“I watched it as long as I could that day,” Pascal said. “Then I had to leave Florida. I found Joel so impressive – I found the whole thing to be a visually stunning experience. And then I worried that I might be copying it too much, which I think might be right on the one hand, but on the other hand it might be a mistake.” Despite that attitude, Pascal says playing Joel is about respecting what made video games stand out.

The actor who played Joel added, “There’s a very, very creative way of honoring what’s important and also preserving what’s iconic to the video game experience. And also things that you would not necessarily expect. And then directions you would expect to go. […] They’re doing some really smart things there. That’s all I can say for now.”

Unfortunately, the first season of the “The Last of Us” TV series has not yet been given a concrete start date.
